Lockers
A locker is assigned to each student upon entering Entiat Junior-Senior High School, which is not to be traded or exchanged unless authorized by the high school secretary. Students are expected to keep belongings in their own lockers. Backpacks and other personal items are not be left in the hall at any time. It is entirely the student's responsibility to keep his/her combination a secret. Student lockers remain the propeerty of the Entiat School District and school officials and staff members have the right, authority, and responsibility to inspect lockers at any time.
Student Valuables/Theft Report
Students are cautioned against bringing radios, cameras, or large amounts of money to school, and if students wear glasses or watches, they should keep track of them at all times. Students, not the school, are responsible for their personal property. Report all thefts or loss of property to the main office immediately.
Radios and Tape/CD/MP3 Players
Student radios and tape/CD/MP3 players are not permitted at school. They will be allowed on team and rooters' buses only with permissionof the coach or adult in charge. Not only do these devices disturb classes, but they are often lost, stolen or damaged.
Hats/Caps
Hats/caps (any head covering) shall not be worn in the Entiat School buildings during school hours (7 am-3:10 pm). Any student who refuses to remove a hat/cap or refuses to surrender a hat/cap to any district employee will be subject to building discipline steps administered by the principal.
Bulletin Boards
Bulletin boards for use by students are in various locations on campus; however, all posters are to be approved by the principal before they are placed on any bulletin board or wall. Nothing is to be posted on painted walls, doors, etc. without permission from the principal.
Visitors
Visitors, and especially parents are welcome. Students must obtain permission at least one day before bringing a guest to school. No visitors are allowed on exam days, when other schools in the region are dismissed for holidays, if the visitor is incurring absence at another school in the area or if prior arrangements have not been made. No visitors will be allowed during the first two weeks or the last two weeks of each semester. Please don't embarrass your guest or yourself by bringing someone to school unannounced.
All visitors must register in the main office and secure a pass. The student must accompany his or her guest throughout the day, and will be responsible for his or her conduct. Present the pass to the teacher at the beginning of each period.
The school is not an appropriate place for babies or small children. Therefore, if you bring a small child, you will be asked to take the child home immediately.
Student Dress
Student dress shall only be regulated when, in the judgement of school administrators, there is a reasonable expectation that:
a) A health or safety hazard shall be presented by the student's dress or appearance;
b) Damage to school property shall result from the student's dress; or
c) A material and substantial disruption of the educational process will result from the student's dress or appearance.
Prohibited clothing includes the wearing of obscene, sexual, drug or alcohol related messages, inappropriate apparel, dress of the opposite sex, and/or hats (headgear). Students are asked not to wear tank top shirts, gym-type shorts or pajama pants and are asked to dress with reasonable modesty, including no exceedingly short dresses/skirts, plunging necklines, or exposed midriffs. Shorts are to be at least mid-thigh and hemmed. Shoes are to be worn at all times. Slippers are not allowed. Parents will be contacted if a problem in this area exists. School administration has alternate clothing to be worn if needed.
Student Vehicle Rules
In accordance with Washington State Law RCW 28.67.100 and WAC 180-40-040, school authorities are empowered to supervise and control private transportaion of students on the way to school and from school, at school and, in addition, require student-operated vehicles to be registerd in the main office. Because our school district operated an extensive transportation system, and provides students with a parking lot as a convenience to students who must drive, the school district will not be held responsible for damage or theft of personal property.
All cars driven to school must be parked in the students' parking area in the proper lanes. NO reckless driving or "squirreling" will be allowed. Speed on campus is 5 mph. Vehicles are not to be moved from the parking lot from 8:20 am to 3:10 pm except for doctor and dentist appointments, work experience, or with permission of the main office. The parking lot is off-limits to students during the school day to protect student vehicles from possible theft or vandalism.
Students are not to park behind the school building (north and south) or drive to and from school through this area. This area must be free for emergency vehicles during school hours and for bus drop-offs and pick-ups. Handicap parking is available for those with a valid state issued handicap permit. Anyone parking in an area designed as handicap parking without a permit is subject to a $175.00 ticket to be issued by the Chelan County Sheriff's Department.
Violations of student vehicle rules could result in loss of driving privileges.
High School Graduation Requirements
Students must fulfill all graduation requirements of the Entiat School District and the State of Washington in order to earn an Entiat diploma and participate in the graduation ceremony.

Class Scheduling Procedures
You, your parents, counselor, and principal all spend a great deal of time and thought during our registration process establishing your schedule for the upcoming semester. Consequently, requests for program changes each semester must be mutually approved by parents, counselor and principal. The only changes permitted without total agreement will be the following:
a) If you are placed in the wrong level class;
b) If you need a class change due to course failure.
After the first five school days of each semester, no schedule changes will be made. After five days, if you withdraw from a class or are taken out of class for disciplinary reasons, you may receive an "F" for the class.
How to Schedule an Appointment with your Counselor
1) |
Go to the counseling office on your unscheduled time to make an appointment |
2) |
Pick an available time to come and see your counselor and sign your name on the counselor's sign-up sheet |
3) |
The counselor will then contact you to discuss the reason you want to see him |
When you are ready to return to class, the counselor will sign a pass, stating the time you leave counseling.
Academic Honesty
Students can expect no credit for work that is not their own. Those found cheating on a test, or helping others cheat, will face serious consequences. These may include failure on the test or more severe consequences as established by the teacher. Plagiarism, the use of materials produced by someone else without acknowledging their source, is a serious academic violation. Students who submit plagiarized work will receive no credit for the assignment.
Academic Expectations
When a student fails a class at Entiat Junior-Senior High School, consequences for that student MAY BE SERIOUS. The student may not be able to graduate due to lack of credits. Because of limited class availabitily, the student may find it difficult to replace the failed class the next semester or in subsequent school years. The student may find him or herself in a position where summer school or correspondence courses are the only way to make up lost credit. Whenever a student is in danger of failing a class, the teacher will contact the parent/guardian and give due notice of the pending failure. If the student's status does not improve, a second parent/guardian contact will be make that could lead to an academic conference.
Report Cards and Grading
Report cards will be mailed home approximately five to seven days after the end of each semester. The grades will become part of the permanent record of each student. The following grading chart will be used:

Incomplete- Student has ten (10) days to change the incomplete work by completing the missing work/test. Grade will be changed to 'F' if the work is not completed and turned in. |
Progress Reports will be mailed or phoned to the parents/guardians by the teachers when students are not doing well in their classes, or when a problem arises concerning classroom performance. A grade check can be done on any student at anytime, at the request of a parent/guardian, through the counseling office. This can be for one class or all of the student's classes.
Leaving School During the Day
Students must be excused prior to leaving school during the school day by signing out in the main office. A note or phone call from the parent/guardian authorizing the student's departure is required prior to the student leaving in order for the absence to be considered excused. Failure to provide such authorization will result in that absence being considered unexcused and disciplinary action for truancy or off-campus without permission will follow. Students who are eigtheen (18) years old and have written permission from their parents on file in the office may write their own notes. Abuse of this procedure will result in the loss of this privilege.
Illness at School
Students who become ill during the school day are to report to the main office immediately. Students are not allowed to leave campus or miss any class due to illness without first checking with the office. The "sick room" and/or school nurse is available in an emergency if the school is unable to contact a student's parent/guardian.
Permission to Leave Class
Students are to report to each assigned class and get a permission slip from their teacher before going to the main office, nurse, counselor, library, locker, etc. Under no circumstances are students to leave class without permission and a pass.
Closed Campus Information
Entiat School District has a closed campus, requiring all students to remain on school grounds from their time of arrival until they are officially dismissed. Seniors may request a waiver of the closed campus policy through the main office. Waiver forms must be completed and returned to the high school secretary for approval by the principal.
Withdrawing from School
A student who is transferring to another school, or for other reasons must leave Entiat Junior-Senior High School, is to report to the main office or counselor. The student must show evidence of parental or guardian apporval for the withdrawal. Once proven, the proper form for withdrawal will be provided and the student must return all schoolbooks and property to the teachers and the library, having each instructor sign the withdrawal form. The completed form is then to be returned to the main office for final approval.
Attendance
A well-planned class provides a learning opportunity for the student every day. If a student is absent, he/she is the one who is losing the educational benefits. Many times it is impossible to make up the "missed experience" - at least in its entirety - and to gain from this learning experience to the same degree that a student would through the group involvement in the regular class.
All absences in accordance with Washington State Law (WAC 180-40-101) require a written excuse from a parent or guardian. Absences will be classified as excused, unexcused or truant.
Excused Absences - Absences for the following reasons will be marked excused:
a) |
Personal illness; |
b) |
Health appointments that cannot be made outside the regular school day; |
c) |
Recognized religious holidays; |
d) |
Emergency family situations; |
e) |
Planned absences which have been approved in advance and meet the prior arrangement criteria (criteria available in the main office); |
f) |
Scheduled court appearances that are previously verified with the principal; |
g) |
School related activities that are cleared by advisor in attendance office prior to the absence. |
Unexcused Absences - Absences for personal reasons with parent permission that do not meet criteria of excused absences will be marked unexcused (see below for examples):
a) |
Absences that do not meet the excused absence or prior arrangement criteria required by school policy; |
b) |
Absences for other than medical reasons or illness which are not approved according to expectations of prior arrangement criteria; |
Habitual offenders will be referred to the principal (3 or more unexcused absences - examples: overslept, errands, car trouble, etc.)
Make-up work: Teachers do not allow graded make-up work for work missed due to an unexcused absence.
Truancy - A student who is absent without the knowledge and consent of a parnet/guardian or who is absent from school after once arriving on campus without the knowledge and consent of the school is truant. Repeated truancy will be cause for disciplinary action, suspension, or expulsion. A student is truant if he or she:
a) |
Leaves school without signing out in the office; |
b) |
Leaves school at lunch without a pass; |
c) |
Is absent from school without prior permission of parents; |
d) |
Is absent from class without permission; |
e) |
Obtains a pass to go to a certain place and does not report there; |
f) |
Becomes ill and goes home or stays in the restroom instead of reporting to the office; |
g) |
Has permission to walk home for lunch, becomes ill and remains there without a parent contact. |
h) |
Comes to school but does not attend class; |
i) |
Fails to attend a scheduled assembly; |
j) |
Falsifies parental notification; |
k) |
Fails to verify absence within one day required time limit. |
Responsibility for Attendance - Student
Students are responsible for daily attendance in all classes. Students are also responsible for understanding that the fifteen (15) absences allowed per semester before loss of credit (as stated in the attendance policy) are to be used for illnesses, family emergencies, and other reasons that constitute an excused absence (listed above). It is expected that students obtain parental permission before any absence. Students should maintain a calendar of all absences and the reasons for those as well as any documentation verifying absences (doctor's notes, appointment slips, etc.). Should disagreements about attendance arise between students and teachers, students should use their own calendars to verify attendance with their teachers. Students returning to school after an absence should report directly to class and make arrangements with their teachers for work missed. In the event of a pre-arranged, extended absence, students should notify their teachers as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made for schoolwork which will be missed during the absence.
Responsibility for Attendance - Parent/Guardian
Parent/guardians are responsible for teaching the value of daily attendance to their children. Parents/guardians should monitor and be aware of their child's attendance and assist them in maintaining any documentation relevant to their absences. Parents/guardians are welcome to call the attendance office at 784-1911 if they have concers about their child's attendance. Please call after 2:30 for the attendance for that current day. Parents/guardians are stronly encouraged to schedule family vacations, trips, college visitations, etc. around the school calendar as those absences do count toward the attendance policy limit of fifteen (15) per semester. In instances where such scheduling is not possible, parents need to evaluate the effect of the absences on the student's academic progress and on the student's status in regards to the attendance policy. Parents are responsible for excusing their student's absences within 48 hours of the beginning of the absence (the day of the absence plus one day).
Tardiness
One of the most fundamental expectations for all Entiat students is that they arrive for class on time. Habitual tardiness creates a disruption to the educational process in the classroom. If a student arrives late to school, he/she will be excused only if a note from the office is marked accordingly. Tardiness to class of more than ten minutes is treated as an absence because the student misses essential instructions and objectives. Teachers record all tardiness. Consequences for excessive tardiness are outlined in the discipline policy.
DISCIPLINE GUIDELINES
The following are to be used as guidelines. If a specific infraction is not listed, the principal shall use judgement in placing the student in the disciplinary process. The seriousness of some infractions may warrant a student entering into the process at a more advanced level.
Unless extenuating circumstances warrant deviation, the following sequential disciplinary process will be followed. The seriousness of some infractions may warrant the student entering the sequence at an advanced level. If a specific infraction is not listed, it will be treated in the same manner as the most similar offense. This is a judgment call and will be made by the person administering the discipline. When suspension is appropriate, it may be served as In-School Suspension at the discretion of the principal.
NOTE: Washington Administrative Code regulations will supersede any of the above stated guidelines. Parental contacts are made in the case of most violations.
Detention
Detention will be served after school and is a viable consequence that can be imposed at the option of the staff member in charge. There are four guidelines for detention:
1) |
A designated staff member will supervise the after school detention. |
2) |
When detentionl is served after school, the student must be given one day's notice to arrange transportation and notify parents. Staff members are encouraged to make parental contact if a student is to be held after school. |
3) |
A student who refuses to comply with a staff member's assignment of detention will be regarded as defying authority and be subject to appropriate disciplinary action when such defiance is reported to the principal. |

Saturday School
The intent of this program is to allow certain students to remain in school instead of being suspended out of school. Students who do not comply with a Saturday School referral will receive an out-of-school suspension. A parent conference will be required after an out-of school suspension. Students need to provide their own transportation to attend Saturday School.
Due Process
The information in this publication regarding student rights and responsibilities is an overview and is condensed from a somewhat longer text contained in the Entiat School District Policy Manual. The entire text is available to students and patrons of the district upon request at the office. Entiat Junior-Senior High School places a high priority on providing each student the opportunity to learn within a safe and stimulating environment. For this reason the school identifies those behaviors which, if allowed to exist without appropriate restrictions and disciplinary action, would interfere with individual and group learning and would interfere with the orderly conduct of our schools. The school professional staff is charged with the responsibility for enforcing the rules of conduct, establishing consistency in their enforcement, and maintaining an apporpriate learning and behavioral environment.
Students involved in any type of disciplinary problem must be assured the following basic rights:
1) |
Notice of changes, nature of the evidence supporting the charges, and the consequences of the charges are proven true. |
2) |
Notice of a right to a hearing at which he or she may respond to the charges. |
3) |
A fair hearing, including the right to present witnesses and evidence. |
4) |
A fair and impartial decision. |
